Walk into any specialty coffee shop, and you'll see options ranging from light to dark roast. But what does that actually mean for the flavor in your cup?
**Light Roast**: Roasted for a shorter time at lower temperatures. These beans retain more of their original characteristics (origin flavors). Expect higher acidity, floral or fruity notes, and a lighter body. They also have slightly more caffeine by volume.
**Dark Roast**: Roasted longer and hotter. The oils rise to the surface, giving the beans a shiny look. The flavor is dominated by the roasting process itself—think smoky, chocolatey, or nutty notes. Acidity is low, and the body is fuller.
**Medium Roast**: The balance. It preserves some origin flavors while introducing the caramel sweetness of the roast.
Which one is better? It's entirely subjective!
